Eskom has announced a planned 9-hour power outage for ten areas in Katlehong on Monday, 19 May, from 9:00 to 18:00. The utility will conduct essential maintenance on its distribution network, affecting residents in Monise, Palime, Moseleki, Tsolo, Ramokonopi, Phooki, Mopeli, Motsamai, Hlahatsi, and Mokoena.
“This interruption in electricity supply is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” Eskom confirmed in a notice.
Residents are urged to prepare for the power outage and take safety precautions by treating all electrical appliances live during the scheduled maintenance.
Braamfischer Phase 2 next in line for Eskom maintenance
On Tuesday, 20 May, parts of Braamfischer Phase 2 will also face a similar 9-hour power outage from 9:00 to 18:00. This forms part of Eskom’s broader effort to carry out preventative maintenance ahead of winter demand spikes.
Eskom expressed its appreciation for public understanding, stating, “We thank you for your cooperation and apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused by this maintenance.”
The power utility added a disclaimer that the outage could be postponed should unforeseen circumstances arise.
System remains stable but under pressure
Despite the upcoming maintenance work, Eskom reported that the national power system has remained stable, with load shedding suspended since 22:00 on Thursday, 15 May. However, the system remains constrained, especially with winter approaching.
“To further stabilise the grid, 2 650MW of generation capacity is expected to be returned to service ahead of the evening peak on Monday,” the utility said.
This additional capacity is critical to supporting demand and avoiding unplanned power outages during cold weather peaks.
