Orlando Pirates announced early on Monday that Spanish tactician Jose Riveiro has been granted an early exit.

The statement from Pirates also went on to say that Riveiro would be starting his job with his new club.

Pirates confirm early Jose Riveiro departure

“Jose (Riveiro) approached us a few weeks ago with a request to be released from his contract ahead of schedule. This having signed with a new club. Given the timing; amidst a series of crucial fixtures – we believed it was best to delay this announcement until after the Nedbank Cup Final. His contribution since joining the Club has been immense. We learned a lot from him, and he learned a lot from us. While we would have preferred to formally honour him with a proper send-off, we fully respect his decision to depart before the end of his tenure.” Wrote a statement from Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza.

That would’ve sent the Pirates fans and general South African football fraternity into a curious sate. However, it hasn’t been long before Riveiro’s next destination was revealed. According to Egyptian publication Yallakora, the Spanish tactician is set to sign for Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

New club revealed as Al Ahly

“Spanish coach José Riveiro is with Al-Ahly after reaching a final agreement to lead the first team.”The Al-Ahly management is currently working on drafting all the terms of the contract before sending it to Jose Rivero, to sign it immediately.” It is noteworthy that the Spanish coach Jose Rivero coached Orlando Pirates of South Africa in his last experience between July 2022 and May 2025, successfully achieving 5 local cups. Wrote the publication.

Riveiro was denied a perfect record in finals by archrivals Kaizer Chiefs in a 2-1 Nedbank Cup final loss. Pirates fans, how do you feel about him leaving early to join Al Ahly?
