‘Saturday is a good opportunity for so many players here to win the Nedbank Cup,’ said the Chiefs forward.

Kaizer Chiefs forward Gaston Sirino is determined to help Amakhosi end their trophy drought, when they take on Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final.

Sirino joined Chiefs this season after being released by Mamelodi Sundowns, with whom he won an vast array of silverware, including two Nedbank Cups.

Sirino’s different set of circumstances

At Chiefs, the 34 year-old Uruguayan is playing for a club in a very different set of circumstances. If Chiefs lose to Pirates on Saturday they will have gone a decade without lifting a single Premier Soccer League trophy.

“I want to make history here,” said Sirino on Monday at Chiefs training.

“Saturday is a good opportunity for so many players here to win the Nedbank Cup. I already won it but Saturday is a special trophy for everyone.”

Pirates will be favourites to beat Chiefs for a second time in eight days, having already won 2-1 in a Betway Premiership clash last Saturday.

Sirino, however, feels Chiefs actually played better than Pirates in that game.

“Of course we played better than them and lost, so we need to push more and focus more,” he added.

“We needed to control the game more, especially when we scored (Glody Lilepo gave Chiefs and early lead).

“In football sometimes you play well and lose. The final is a different game, but I think we can prepare well this week to win it.”

Patchy Chiefs form

Sirino’s own form for Chiefs this season has been patchy – he has just three goals and six assists in 23 appearances in all competitions.

“I want more,” said Sirino.

“Sometimes we play good but I have no assists or goals. I also need to focus on myself and my mistakes to assist or score more.”

Sirino also admitted that the main difference between Sundowns and Chiefs is the overall quality of their squads.

“Sundowns have too many players and they are all good players,” he said.

“Sometimes we have one injury, and then another, and then the team is more short. If (Inacio) Miguel or someone is injured then we need (Bradley) Cross to play centre back.

“At Sundowns, no, they have too many players in all positions. But the quality here is also good.”
