The Western Cape police are mourning the loss of a fellow officer after a 35-year-old female administrative clerk from Kraaifontein SAPS was fatally shot in a brazen daylight attack outside the Gatesville Mosque in Athlone on Saturday afternoon.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the tragic incident occurred at approximately 13:45, when two armed suspects targeted the victim and her 56-year-old companion as they were exiting their vehicle in the mosque’s parking lot.

The 56-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Further details about her condition remain undisclosed.

Deliberately targeted

Authorities have launched a murder and attempted murder investigation, led by detectives from the Anti-Gang Unit, as initial reports suggest the victims were deliberately targeted.

“We appeal to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to anonymously submit tips via the MySAPS mobile app,” said Pojie, urging the public’s cooperation to help bring the perpetrators to justice.

The incident has left the Athlone community shaken, particularly due to its proximity to a place of worship and the involvement of a police officer.

Police visibility has since been increased in the area.
