What Orlando Pirates needs to reach CAF Champions League final

Following their disappointing goalless draw against Pyramids in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final, Orlando Pirates need a win or a goalscoring draw to reach the final.

They travel to the 30 June Stadium to play Pyramids in the second leg on Friday evening. The odds are not in their favour despite going unbeaten in the competition thus far.

If it wasn’t for VAR last weekend, the Buccaneers would have gone down 2-0 at the FNB Stadium. The Egyptians scored two goals but were all ruled out for offside, giving Pirates a lifeline going into the second leg.

Having reached their last CAF Champions League final in 2013, Orlando Pirates are desperate to reach another final, given how good their squad is. Having won five trophies in three seasons, the Sea Robbers are chasing an elusive star that would make them the most successful Southern African team in terms of continental glory.

How Pirates can reach the CAF Champions League final

The Buccaneers need to beat the Pyramids in Egypt or at least secure a goal-scoring draw. A goalless draw will force the two teams to decide the winner in a penalty shootout. The pressure is more on Pirates given their hunger and desire to reach another final. The Egyptian side will also feel the pressure in front of their supporters but they have nothing to lose, having already overachieved.

Which team between Pirates and Pyramids, which team is likely to reach the CAF Champions League final?

Pirates need to score first to force their opponents to open up. An early goal will release pressure off Jose Riveiro and allow them to play a defensive game, knowing their opponents need to score twice. If the home team scores early, it’s not the end of the world for the Buccaneers, as they will have more than enough time to score an away goal.

The Buccaneers have a slight advantage, as one goal might be enough to see them through. Pyramids playing at home, at night and in front of a packed crowd also gives them some advantage.

Can the Buccaneers reach the final?
