A truck delivering beer was looted on the N2 highway near Umgababa, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday morning.

According to the South Coast Sun, the chaotic incident was captured by a motorist.

It shows people from the surrounding community and passing drivers helping themselves to the beer cargo after the truck stopped on the side of the highway.

In the video, the truck can be seen parked just beyond the yellow line, where crowds quickly gathered to grab crates and cans. Watch:

The reason behind the truck pulling over remains unclear. It is not known whether the vehicle had mechanical issues, ran out of fuel, or if the driver stopped for another reason.

According to Dalene Heath from Toti Community Assist, police and private security company ET Rapid Response arrived on the scene to disperse the crowd. However, no arrests have been made.

The incident highlighted the ongoing challenges with opportunistic crime on South African highways, where stopped trucks often become easy targets for looters.

There have been multiple similar occurrences in recent years, drawing attention to safety concerns faced by transport companies and drivers operating on the country’s major routes.

Brazen looters steal mayonnaise from accident scene

Meanwhile, brazen looters in Gauteng were captured stealing mayonnaise from an accident scene that left the R21 highway an oily mess.

Earlier this year, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers had to disperse a large crowd of looters making off with mayonnaise by the armload.

This was after a truck carrying the tangy condiment was involved in an accident on the R21 freeway. Read more on that story here.
