In a shock announcement that reverberated around the netball community this past weekend, World Netball announced that it had suspended Netball South Africa president Cecilia Molokwane.
Called to step down from her duties as NSA president, Molokwane is said to be under investigation for serious accusations of misconduct, chief among them allegations that she misused NSA funds for her own personal gain leading up to, and during, the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town.
It’s also been reported that the investigation will look into her alleged “consistent bullying and harassing of NSA staff and board members, when questioned over her use of Netball South Africa funds.”
In an interesting twist, Africa Netball’s management committee has apparently called on World Netball to lift the provisional suspension, while Molokwane has now also responded to the allegations.
Stern response from Netball South Africa (NSA) president Cecilia Molokwane
In a meeting between NSA and the parliamentary portfolio committee for sport, arts and culture on Tuesday morning, Molokwane issued a statement outlining her position on this matter.
“World Netball has yet to determine whether I have a case to answer nor have I been formally charged with any misconduct,” her email read.
“I vehemently deny having conducted myself in contravention of World Netball’s disciplinary code and will vigorously defend any allegations which may subsequently be levelled against me.
“I firmly believe in the importance of due process and the right to a fair hearing. All I ask is for the opportunity to present my side of the story and to defend myself against allegations that have been made by anonymous individuals.
“Whistle-blowing should serve the purpose of accountability and transparency, not to be a tool for faceless accusations that risk damaging reputations without proper scrutiny.”
