The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has strongly refuted fake social media posts claiming that the Old Age Grant will be discontinued in May if certain documents are not updated by 30 April.
No grant cancellations, says SASSA
SASSA clarified that the widely circulated message is false and has no basis.
“This message is mischievous, and we urge our beneficiaries not to panic as no grant will be cancelled,” the agency stated.
Furthermore, grants are only reviewed when necessary, and those affected are contacted directly.
This clarification comes after numerous screenshots and posts created confusion and concern among beneficiaries. The agency expressed concern that such misinformation causes distress, particularly among vulnerable groups who rely on social grants for daily survival.
Fake news spreading panic
Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA’s national spokesperson, warned that these false claims have far-reaching effects, especially on older people who depend on grants as their sole income.
Additionally, social grants currently support more than 19 million South Africans.
Trust only official sources
In response to the confusion, SASSA has urged the public to rely only on verified channels.
“We appeal to our beneficiaries to only rely on credible sources of information on our official social media pages,” Letsatsi said.
Letsatsi encouraged people to verify details before sharing them online to prevent spreading anxiety-inducing rumours.
The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting the well-being of beneficiaries. It also assured the public that it will communicate directly with individuals when any grant-related action is necessary.
As misinformation spreads easily online, SASSA called on all South Africans to act responsibly and help protect the elderly and vulnerable from unnecessary distress.
Should social media platforms do more to combat fake news about critical public services like social grants?
