SOUTH AFRICA LAUNCHES TRADED ELECTRICITY MARKET
For a long time, South Africa depended on Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd for electricity supply to their households or facilities.
However, the country has launched a traded electricity market to licensed traders, with Rand Merchant Bank backing the innovation.
This comes after prolonged mismanagement and underinvestment culminated in record outages in 2023.
Thus, the persistent load shedding has made the situation worse.
As reported by BusinessTech, the price of electricity in South Africa between 2008 and 2023 increased more than eight times the amount, with the inflation rate sitting at 215% at the time.
The country’s constrained transmission network has resulted in a shortage of renewable power plants that can be built.
“We are also crowding in international players who are very experienced on the technical side of transmission lines and so forth and looking to bolster the capacity that the country has,” said Judy Kobus, head of infrastructure sector solutions at RMB.
Do you think the innovation of traded electricity markets might bring change to South Africa’s electricity woes?
