South Africa’s whisky industry continues to shine on the global stage, with Three Ships Whisky’s Bourbon Cask expression being awarded the coveted title of World’s Best Blended Whisky at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards (WWA) in London.
Produced at the renowned James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, the Bourbon Cask expression captured the attention of the international judging panel with its bold, innovative flavour profile.
Global recognition
Judges highlighted notes of “varnished oak, vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate, and smoked pineapple” on the nose, leading into “cornflake, caramel sauce, and ripe fruits” on the palate, and finishing with “spicy oak, brown sugar, and vanilla.”
This latest accolade adds to a legacy of global recognition for South African whisky:
- 2012: Three Ships 5-Year-Old Premium Select named World’s Best Blended Whisky
- 2024: Three Ships 12-Year-Old Double Wood awarded World’s Best Blended Limited Release
- 2013 & 2024: Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky named World’s Best Grain Whisky, most recently for its Founders Collection 15-Year-Old
“This win is a testament to the skill, passion, and innovation of South African distillers,” said a representative from the James Sedgwick Distillery.
“We are proud to produce whiskies that not only honour our unique terroir but also compete with the finest whiskies from around the world.”
With these consistent achievements, South Africa is firmly establishing itself as a serious contender in the global whisky landscape, elevating the country’s reputation for producing world-class spirits.
