Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has criticised his Tshwane counterpart, Nasiphi Moya, for her elaborate motorcade at her first State of the City address this week.

Like the City of Cape Town, Moya has been praised for Tshwane’s good governance. This includes actively closing illegal spaza shops, fixing broken roads, lights, and robots, impounding vehicles without licenses, and keeping the city clean.

The leading lady has also pledged to provide clean drinking water to her district and the surrounding areas.

CAPE TOWN MAYOR SHADES NASIPHI MOYA

On Thursday, 10 April, Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya delivered her first State of the City address at the Tshwane House. The outspoken leader arrived in an elaborate procession of motorcyclists, Metro Police, and Fire and Rescue vehicles.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis tweeted of a clipposted on Tshwane’s official X account: “Mayors are servants, not royalty.”

While some social media users agreed with Hill-Lewis’s stance, others disagreed.

@MikaNgobeni:“Don’t be jealous, not a good look. This lady works damn hard and has done well for the city.”

@ngingulungelo: “She’s not just a mayor. We are proud of her; she’s royalty to us as she treats us as such.”

@Britzs2Suzette: “Nasiphi Moya deserved to be honoured like royalty for a day. As the cornerstone of the coalition, she leads from the front with unwavering dedication and service to all“.

Action SA chairperson – who left the DA in 2019 – also clapped back, reminding the Cape Town mayor of ousted Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink, who also benefitted from the parade last year.

He replied: “Perhaps you would be so kind as to show us the same post of moral indignation you shared last year when your failed and discredited former Mayor participated in the same ceremony?”

He added: “Your hypocrisy is showing. Perhaps you want to tuck it away?”

FORMER TSHWANE MAYOR WEIGHS IN

Like Geordin Hill-Lewis, former Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink has also publicly criticisedNasiphi Moya.

On his X account, the DA leader criticized Moya’s action plan to continue shutting down illegal businesses.

He tweeted this week: “In the meantime, Tshwane suffers rolling, unattended power outages because the budget has been cut to fund water tankers and security companies.”

Late last year, Cilliers Brink was removed from his post in a dramatic showdown.

According to IOL,120 councillors voted in favour of his removal, 87 against it, and one abstained.
