Orlando Pirates have an abundance of up-and-coming talent – from Relebohile Mofokeng to Mbekezeli Mbokazi – and look eager to add more, including Zambian striker Andrew Phiri.
“They already seem to have tied down the boy from Baroka [Kgositsile], but we know they also want a forward for some reason despite having Tshegofatso [Mabasa] and [Evidence] Makgopa,” a source confirmed.
“Andrew Phiri is one of the many strikers they are currently looking at. He is not that old and comes from Zambia.”
Aged twenty-three, Phiri caught the attention of Orlando Pirates’ scouts with his marksman capabilities and work rate. The FC MUZA forward has a bright future and would excel under the experienced Mabasa and Makgopa.
FC MUZA’s chief executive officer, Joel Kabika, confirmed that the Buccaneers have wasted no time identifying whether he is their man, trialling Phiri during the latest international break.
Is Riveiro staying?
Orlando Pirates have made no progress with the soon-to-be out-of-contract Jose Riveiro. As things stand, June 30 will be his last day in charge.
The Buccaneers, eager to secure the Spanish native for three additional years, offered Riveiro a contract before the current season but will have to wait until after the season for his decision.
“There is an offer for the coach to continue for another three years, but he has asked to wait until the end of the season. His main wish is to win the league, and if that happens, he may leave because he misses home,” a source explained.
“The league title may decide the coach’s future. That’s what’s believed as things stand,
“Nothing has been agreed upon because the coach hasn’t made up his mind. He has made it clear that he misses home and family. And will only consider his future at the end of the season. However, the club has already opened talks with his representatives, hoping for the best outcome.”
Would this be a good signing for Orlando Pirates?
