Qantas to launch ‘world’s longest flight’
Autralian airline, Qantas Airways will soon offer the world’s longest flight, which will span more than 16 000km and take up to 22 hours.
According to Time Out, Qantas reportedly plans to launch the first ever non-stop flight between London and Sydney two years from now.
The ‘ultra long-haul’ flight, dubbed ‘Project Sunrise’, will last 22 hours, cover over 16 000km, have no stopovers, and will alllow passengers to witness two sunrises while on board a single flight.Â
Flights will be onboard the specially designed Airbus A350-1000s planes, which will have less seats to create more space. There will also be an area between the economy and premium sections to encourage passengers to move about and stretch their legs.Â
Project Sunrise was actually due to be complete by 2024, but faced delays due to the pandemic.
It’s also not officially confirmed that Sydney to London Heathrow will be the world’s longest flight route, as Qantas’s direct 18-hour flights from Sydney to New York may claim the spot.
Beating out Singapore Airlines
When Project Sunrise kicks off in 2027, the world’s current longest flight by Singapore Airlines, will take a back seat.
This trip, which connects New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) covers over 15 000km and has a scheduled duration of about 18 hours and 50 minutes.
The service has held the record for the longest commercial service since its inception in 2021.
Will you ever take such a long flight? Or do you prefer stopovers on your journey?
