One of South Africa’s favourite football sons, Benni McCarthy, recently took up a top job as the head coach of the Kenya national team.
The 47-year-old, who was assessing his options after leaving Manchester United in the off-season, has now landed a plum national coaching job that represents an interesting next step in his career.
It is undoubtedly a role that comes with a lucrative contract, and according to publications such as Afrika-Foot and Pulse Kenya, McCarthy was reported to be in line to earn Ksh8 millionwhich equates to around R1.45 millionper month in salary for the next two years.
However, it has since been clarified by the Football Kenya Federation that the Harambee Stars coach is not actually earning wages quite in that region.
“There have been false reports claiming Benni McCarthy will be earning Ksh8 million a month. To be clear, this is inaccurate,” FKF Head of Communications Jeff Kinyanjui stated.
“The coach’s salary is paid by the government and falls under the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) guidelines. Even the entire technical bench does not earn such an amount collectively,” he added.
“Let’s uphold responsible reporting and avoid misleading the public. Spreading misinformation not only misguides fans but also distracts from the real work of supporting our national team. Let’s focus on facts and back the team constructively,” he concluded.
McCarthy is set to work with former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs, assistant coach Vasili Manousakis and performance analyst Pilela Maposa.
It means McCarthy may be earning a figure somewhat lower than widely reported, but it’s still likely to be in the region of R1m a month.
Benni McCarthy has widespread backing with Kenya
The former Bafana star’s Kenya contract, as confirmed by FKF president Hussein Mohammed, will include performance bonuses.
“The contract rewards the technical bench with every good performance. We believe we have put together the right technical bench,” said Mohammed.
“The performance reward system, being KPI for the coaches, and the entire technical bench, and their term is up to AFCON 2027.”
