The South African Weather Service(SAWS) has issued multiple warnings regarding disruptive rain in several provinces this weekend.
They have also issued a yellow level 2 warning for most areas in KwaZulu-Natal. This warning indicates that disruptive rain with heavy downpours could lead to flooding of roads and settlements, damage to infrastructure, and mudslides in the southeastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
Gauteng, North-West, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal are expected to experience rain this weekend. However, strong winds, hail, or excessively heavy rainare not anticipated in some of these provinces, as confirmed by the weather service on Friday.
Wet weather this weekend for KZN
Earlier this week, parts of KwaZulu-Natal experienced severe flooding, rendering multiple roads impassable. Tragically, at least one person has died as a result of the adverse weather conditions; the body of a woman was found in a river in Pinetown.
Senzelwe Mzila, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), stated that teams are on the ground assessing the damage caused by the weather.
“The intense downpour wreaked havoc across coastal regions, leading to widespread flooding, uprooted trees, and significant disruptions to electricity supply in numerous communities. Technical teams are working diligently to restore power to affected areas.
“(We are) actively coordinating with all municipalities to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the heavy rains. Preliminary reports indicate substantial impact on road infrastructure and disruptions to service delivery,” said Mzila.
For the next few days, the weather looks more or less the same in many parts of KZN, with a 40 to 60% chance of rain expected.
