Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya has won the admiration of South Africans as she continues her crackdown against illegal and non-compliant business operators.
Her latest task was shutting down several nightclubs that operated outside their licensing agreements.
The outspoken and proactive leader has been repeatedly praised for her good governance in Tshwane. This includes closing illegal spaza shops, fixing broken roads, lights, and robots, impounding vehicles without licenses, and keeping the city clean.
Moya has also been praised for her pledge to provide clean drinking water to her municipality and the surrounding areas.
TSHWANE MAYOR SHUTS CLUBS, URGES STUDENTS TO STUDY INSTEAD
On her popular X account, Tshwane mayor Nasiphi Moya revealed that she and her team would be responding to concerns about nightclubs in the Hatfield area.
“I had to see the situation firsthand,” she tweeted.
An hour later, Moya shared an update.
She tweeted: “We are closing down [nightclub] Square 2.0 due to non-compliance with building regulations. Patrons are vacating the establishment. Students have extra hours to study tonight.
Moya explained that the vice-chancellor of the University of Pretoria had shared their concerns about student safety at nightclubs in the area.
“We have a responsibility to keep all the residents of Tshwane safe, especially the young people”.
According to MMC for Community Safety Hannes Coetzee, the mission alongside the Tshwane Mayor was to ensure that city bylaws were enforced.
Addressing parents, Coetzee said: “You think that your child is studying at university. Meanwhile they are running around in these clubs. This is a place of learning and education; they cannot have a liquor license.”
NO-NONSENSE APPROACH
Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya is widely known for her no-nonsense and unbiased approach to “cleaning up” the city.
This extends to corruption within the municipality, which Moya intends to take action against.
Since assuming office in October 2024, an investigation has identified city staff who would face disciplinary action, criminal prosecution, and even financial misconduct.
“When the wrong has been done, we’re not going to look away from it,” Moya told the media at a briefing commemorating her 100 days in office.
