The talented South African actress Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku widely known for her roles in Outlaws and Red Inkrecently opened up about a troubling experience she faced on set, bursting the important conversations about consent and personal boundaries in the entertainment industry.
Nirvana revealed in an Instagram post that during a recent project, she encountered a violation of her boundaries while filming a scene where her character was depicted as a victim of murder and rape.
“I am writing to share an experience I had during a recent project on set, involving a violation of my personal boundaries in a scene where the character I was playing was being murdered and raped,” she expressed.
This revelation comes at a time when conversations about consent were actively unfolding on social media, largely ignited by a recent storyline in Skeem Saam.
The incident took place during a typical night of filming, where the cast expected professionalism and respect. “The rape could be implied in a close-up; it was rehearsed that he would push me over the car bonnet, lay on my back to whisper in my ear, then come out of the frame, which was on a close-up of my face screaming, and the scene would end there,” she detailed.
“I had requested to be taken to therapy upon completion of my role,” she added. “My physical and psychological boundaries were no simulation of the act of rape.”
In seeking a resolution, she requested a simple remedy: therapy and a written apology. This request was later agreed upon as therapy and a mediated meeting, which she described as being met with hostility, gaslighting, and intimidation, ultimately leading to inaction.
