Prince Frederik of Luxembourg, the youngest son of Grand Duke Henri’s cousin Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau, has passed away at the young age of 22 in Paris, France.
Who announced the passing of Prince Frederik?
According to PEOPLE, Prince Frederik passed away on March 1, 2025.
The news was announced by the prince’s father through the website of the POLG Foundation.
The POLG Foundation was founded by Frederik himself. He hoped that it would help people with POLG Mitochondrial disease like him, who has had the disease since he was 14. The organisation also aimed to find a treatment for this illness.
“It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son, The POLG Foundation Founder and Creative Director, Frederik,” Prince Frederik’s father said in his announcement. He then defined the disease.
What is POLG Mitochondrial disease?
According to the POLG Foundation, POLG Mitochondrial disease is “a genetic disorder that causes progressive organ dysfunction by depriving cells of energy.”
Prince Frederik’s goodbye
The statement also detailed Prince Frederik’s goodbye. He managed to say goodbye to his family members during his final days. He first said goodbye to his mother, who stood by his side for 15 years, and then he talked to the rest of the family.
“Frederik found the strength and the courage to say goodbye to each of us in turn – his brother, Alexander; his sister, Charlotte; me; his three cousins, Charly, Louis, and Donall; his brother-in-law, Mansour; and finally, his Aunt Charlotte and Uncle Mark,” the statement read.
Prince Frederik’s sense of humour
The prince’s father also talked about how his son had a unique sense of humour that remained with him till the end. The statement said:
“Even in his last moments, his humour, and his boundless compassion, compelled him to leave us with one last laugh.”
His father is proud of him
Prince Robert detailed how Prince Frederik had asked him if he was proud of him. His answer was clear. To Prince Robert, Prince Frederik was a extraordinary. The father then talked more about his son’s character and how kind he was.
“He has social skills like no other, an amazing sense of humour, an emotional intelligence and compassion that were off the charts, a sense of justice, fairness and decency that knows no bounds. He was disciplined and organised beyond belief.”
His health before his death
Before his death, Prince Frederik was hospitalised due to pneumonia and a serious infection.
Despite this, the prince “fought his disease valiantly until the very end.”
His father recounted how his son looked at life. “His indomitable lust for life propelled him through the hardest of physical and mental challenges. Our cheery Frederik saw the beauty in everything.”
Asking for donations
In the statement posted on the POLG Foundation website, Prince Frederik’s father asked people to donate to keep Frederik’s memory alive.
“For anyone who is inclined to donate something in our adored Frederik’s memory, please consider donating to help find therapies and a cure for this cruel disease,” the statement read.
Another celebrity who recently asked for donations was Deli Malinga.
While Prince Frederik didn’t hold any royal duties since he wasn’t in the immediate line of succession, he had a lot of philanthropy efforts including his foundation.
For example, he collaborated with designer Donna Karan to development the MITO clothing line. According to the New York Post, this line was used to raise funds.
In addition to the request of the prince’s father, the lengthy statement ended with describing what Prince Frederik’s was passionate about.
The passions of Prince Frederik
Someone like Prince Frederik was full of life. He had many passions that his family kindly shared in the statement.
His passions included “Music, Film, Television, Gastronomy, Nature, Fossils and Minerals, Photography and Art.”
The prince will be remembered by his family and the POLG Foundation.
