Kaizer Chiefs favourite star faces an uncertain future, according to SABC Sport.
Chiefs midfielder George Matlou is carefully evaluating his future, as the club has yet to present him with a contract extension. With his current deal set to expire on June 30, Matlou understands the urgency of securing his next move. If Amakhosi continue to delay negotiations, the talented playmaker will be free to explore opportunities elsewhere, potentially joining a rival club without Chiefs receiving a transfer fee. As the deadline approaches, the pressure mounts on Chiefs to either commit to Matlou or risk losing him for nothing.
Matlou’s resurgence under coach Nabi
Matlou battled through early-season fitness concerns but has now cemented his place as a key player under Nasreddine Nabi. His recent performances have impressed, making him a vital asset as Chiefs aim to rebuild and reclaim their dominance in South African football.
Despite his growing influence, contract talks remain stalled. SABC Sport reports that Chiefs are far from securing a new deal, allowing Matlou to negotiate a pre-contract with other clubs.
Chiefs’ contract delay could cost them
Chiefs initially delayed deciding whether to trigger Matlou’s contract extension at the end of last season. While they eventually activated the option, it only keeps him at the club until June 30, leaving his future uncertain.
Sources indicate Matlou is eager to continue working under Nabi as the Soweto giants push to reclaim their former glory. However, with no long-term offer on the table, Premier Soccer League (PSL) rivals have taken notice. From July 1, clubs can sign him without paying a transfer fee, a situation that puts Amakhosi at risk of losing yet another key player.
Chiefs’ woes mirror past mistakes
Amakhosi found themselves in a similar predicament last season with senior players Sifiso Hlanti and Keagan Dolly. Both awaited new deals, but Chiefs let their contracts expire, forcing them to seek new clubs. Matlou is determined not to face the same uncertainty.
With time running out, Chiefs must decide whether to secure Matlou’s future or risk losing him for free. As PSL rivals prepare their offers, the ball is now in Amakhosi’s court.
