The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides monthly grant payments to its beneficiaries. The grant payments include a Child Support grant, Disability grant, Old age grant, Care dependency grant, Social Relief of Distress, Foster Child Grant, War Veterans Grant and Grant in aid.

With many South Africans experiencing financial difficulties, checking your balance without airtime can be challenging. However, SASSA has introduced methods to check your balance with no airtime required.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR SASSA BALANCE WITHOUT USING AIRTIME

Here are five ways how to check your SASSA balance without using airtime:

1. USSD Codes

SASSA provides free USSD codes that beneficiaries can use to check their balance from any cell phone. No airtime or data is required. These are the steps you need to follow:

    • Call 12069277# or another SASSA USSD code.
    • Follow the on-screen prompts.
    • Fill in your SASSA card number.
    • The balance will show up on your screen instantly.

    2. SASSA WhatsApp Line

Through SASSA’s WhatsApp line, only data is required to enquire about your balance:

      • Copy the official SASSA WhatsApp number: 082 046 8553.
      • Navigate to WhatsApp and chat with this number.
      • Text the message “Check Balance” or follow the instructions.
      • Get your balance message on WhatsApp.

      3. ATMs

You can check your balance by withdrawing money with your SASSA card from any ATM:

        • Tap your SASSA card at any ATM.
        • Enter your PIN as usual.
        • Select the “Check Balance” option.
        • You will see your balance on the screen or printed on a slip.

        4. Postbank

If you prefer personal assistance or online services, Postbank offers an alternative for checking your SASSA balance:

          • Visit your nearest Postbank branch.
          • Contact a teller for balance information or check your balance on Postbank’s online services.

          5. SASSA’s Online Services

If you have internet access, you can use SASSA’s website:

            • Sign in or create an account using your SASSA card number.

            • View your balance instantly.

            69-YEAR-OLD ARRESTED FOR DEFRAUDING SASSA

A 69-year-old woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for defrauding SASSA by submitting false documents to receive an old-age grant. According to the statement, Devi Sarathamoney received approval for the grant from 2017 to 2022, during which time she was the sole director of a company linked to the government.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of SASSA, Themba Matlou, expressed his satisfaction with the sentencing.

“Using illegal documentation to get SASSA money will eventually catch up with anyone in the future as the organisation conducts interviews monthly to ensure that we are paying the right grant to the right to the right person,” said Matlou.

The Pretoria North Regional Court found her guilty of theft, perjury, and fraud against the agency.
