  • Thousands of EFF supporters marched in the rain to Joburg Water demanding an end to water cuts affecting residents.
  • The party claims poor leadership and aging infrastructure have left 45 reservoirs needing urgent repairs.

Thousands of EFF members marched through the rain from Joubert Park to the Joburg Water offices on Monday, demanding an end to water cuts in Johannesburg.

The march forms part of the party’s service delivery campaign across South Africa, pushing for clean water, proper housing, and an end to illegal dumping.

The protest follows last month’s announcement by the metro that it would cut water supply due to pressure on reservoirs from high consumption.

EFF leader Sinawo Tambo said water cuts are threatening residents’ health and human rights.

“Unfortunately, water shedding in this metro is not due to a water shortage but poor leadership and aging infrastructure, leading to 48% of water being lost to illegal connections and leaks. The municipality faces over R27 billion in infrastructure maintenance and expansion backlogs. Forty-five out of 28 reservoirs need urgent renovations, with 28 in a dire condition.

“As a result, residents in the municipality, whether in the suburbs or townships, have been going days and weeks on end without a water supply,” he said.

Gauteng EFF chairperson Nkululeko Dunga claimed politically connected people are making millions from inflated costs and corrupt tenders.

“We are demanding a skills audit in the Joburg Water board and a full forensic investigation into suspicious water tanker tenders benefiting politically connected syndicates. We are calling for those profiting from the crisis to be held accountable,” he said.
