Mthandeni “SK” Manqele allegedly assaults a fan
Wandile “Mbhekeni” Dlamini, a devoted Maskandi fan, is demanding accountability from the South African Police Service after his assault case against popular artist Mthandeni “SK” Manqele was allegedly dropped without resolution.
Dlamini claims that Manqele assaulted him on December 17, 2024, at KwaSthagimant Tavern in Chesterville, Durban.
A video clip that circulated on social media appears to show the musician attacking and chasing him.
Speaking about the incident, Dlamini shared his side of the story: “I am Mthandeni’s fan, and I went there to watch his performance. After his set, my friends and I approached him for pictures. I greeted him and called him by his nickname, Dunudunu. This must have provoked him because he ran towards me and started assaulting me.”
According to Dlamini, he attempted to flee, but Manqele chased him. “As I was running away, two of his crew members also attacked me. They were punching and kicking me,” he recalled. The following day, he sought medical treatment and on December 19, he formally opened a case at the Cato Manor police station.
However, Dlamini was shocked to learn that the case had been closed.
“Towards the end of January, I was told that the case had been dropped because they couldn’t locate Mthandeni. I am aggrieved because Mthandeni is still here in South Africa, and his performances are public. The venues are known. Clearly, the police are protecting him since he is a celebrity.”
Manqele acknowledged that he was in Durban performing on the night in question but declined to comment further.
“I can confirm that, on that date, I was in Durban performing. But I cannot comment on this incident as it is sub judice,” he stated.
KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, distanced himself from the matter, stating: “I’m sure the investigating officer told him why it was closed. Other than that, I cannot disclose anything.”
