WhatsApp rolls out a major update

WhatsApp has introduced a major update that changes how users interact with voice messages. The new feature, rolled out in November 2024, allows users to instantly convert voice messages into text. This update is now available in South Africa, making it easier to follow conversations without listening to audio clips.

WhatsApp Voice message transcripts now available for users

Users can enable voice message transcriptions by navigating to Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts. Once activated, WhatsApp automatically converts incoming voice notes into text, ensuring seamless communication even in noisy environments. The feature operates directly on the device, keeping transcriptions private and inaccessible to WhatsApp or third parties.

However, not all languages are supported. While English and several major languages are available, Afrikaans speakers will have to wait, as the feature does not yet support their language.

Some iPhones will lose access in May

Alongside the transcription feature, according to IOL, WhatsApp announced it would discontinue support for user devices running iOS 15.1 or earlier, starting on May 5. This means iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus users must update their software or upgrade their devices to continue using the app.

WhatsApp justified the decision by citing security improvements and new features. As technology advances, older devices struggle to support critical security updates.

Updating the operating system will resolve the issue for WhatsApp users with iPhones capable of running newer iOS versions. However, those with models like the iPhone 5s, which cannot upgrade beyond iOS 12, must consider purchasing a newer device.

A Convenient or Controversial Change?

The voice message transcription feature offers convenience for users, particularly for users who prefer reading over listening. However, the lack of Afrikaans support and WhatsApp’s decision to cut off older iPhones may frustrate some users.
