Numerous political parties have since expressed their outrage over the move from Stage 3 to Stage 6 load shedding.
Political parties such as the Democratic Alliance (DA), uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) and Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) have spoken out through statements and social media posts. Here’s what they had to say.
STAGE 6 LOAD SHEDDING SPARKS POLITICAL OUTRAGE
uMkhonto WeSizwe Party (MK Party) took to X and reposted a video of Adil Nchabeleng. Nchabeleng last week raised an alarm in Parliament over the planned shutdown of three coal power stations.
“Last week at a glance: Hon. Adil Nchabeleng raises alarming capacity questions regarding the planned shut down of three coal power stations, namely: Hendrina, Camden, and Grootvlei – removing a total of 4,700MW from the grid, at the Portfolio Committee on Electricity and Energy,” the Party said in the post.
In their X account, the EFF said the implementation of Stage 6 load shedding is a testament of a “failed GNU”.
“In just a few hours, we moved from Stage 3 to Stage 6—proof of the failed GNU that cannot provide basic services. South Africans are back in the dark because of incompetence and corruption. South Africans are back in the dark because of incompetence and corruption!,” the post read.
The DA expressed that the recent power cuts are proof that the country cannot rely on Eskom.
“The over-reliance on Eskom to maintain and build new generation capacity has led to the creation of a monopoly of supply, and what is essentially a single point of failure.
“South Africa urgently needs to open its electricity supply sector. By accelerating the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme. Incentivizing the private sector to become more actively involved in addressing our electricity needs.”
WHY STAGE 6 LOAD SHEDDING WAS IMPLEMENTED?
During a media briefing on Sunday, 23 February 2025 in Pretoria, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa detailed the issues that led to the.
Ramokgopa said “extraordinary circumstances” caused the sudden implementation of Stage 6 after its suspension for about 20 days.
“Please accept our sincerest apologies. With the greatest level of humility, I want to say to the country that we regret that there is a setback.
“We are coming back to you while we have another bout of load shedding which has a greater intensity,” Ramokgopa explained.
REASONS FOR MOVE TO STAGE 6 LOAD SHEDDING
The minister listed numerous issues which led to the country being hit by power outages. The reasons include:
TRIPPING OF UNITS
- Five at Majuba Power Station
- One at Medupi
- Four at Camden Power Station
PLANNED MAINTENANCE
Over 7 000MW is offline due to planned maintenance.
REPLENISHMENT OF EMERGENCY RESERVES
Emergency reserves need to be replenished as they are being used up.
