TS Galaxy and Richards Bay FC secured the last two spots in this season’s Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.
Both teams delivered solid performances against their respective opponents to advance to the next round of the competition.
Other teams in the quarter-finals include Stellenbosch FC, Cape Town City FC, Mamelodi Sundowns, Magesi FC, Kaizer Chiefs, and Marumo Gallants.
Last season’s Carling Knockout finalists Galaxy defeated Chippa United with a narrow 1-0 scoreline at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga. It was a tight contest that pushed to extra time after a 0-0 draw. Substitute Dzenan Zajmovic broke the deadlock in the 103rd minute. Eleven minutes later, the hosts were down to 10 men after Zajmovic received a red card.
Galaxy were further reduced to nine men when another substitute, Victor Letsoalo, was sent off in the 120th minute after a second yellow card.
The two teams were meeting for the second time this season. In a league match played last month, the Chilli Boys claimed a 2-1 victory.
The victory was crucial for the Rockets, as it was their first in the 2024/25 campaign. It also ended their three-match losing streak. Galaxy have been struggling to grind positive results in the early stages of the league.
RICHARDS BAY ELIMINATE SEKHUKHUNE UNITED FROM THE CARLING KNOCKOUT
In another encounter, Richards Bay FC eliminated Sekhukhune United from the Carling Knockout following a 1-0 victory at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban. Fullback Lwandle Mabuya scored the only goal of the match in the 42nd minute, just before the break.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates star Lesedi Kapinga made his Sekhukhune debut. He joined the club at the start of the season as a free agent. The 29-year-old was introduced in the 55th minute.
Last season, the Natal Rich Boys ended their Carling Knockout campaign in the semi-finals. This was after a 3-0 defeat against Stellenbosch FC who were crowned champions.
The victory saw the KZN side end their three-match winless streak. In the last three matches, Richards Bay registered a draw and suffered two defeats.
