Showmax is set to deliver a punch with its new romantic comedy, Gebokste Liefde, which translates to ‘Boxed Love’. SAFTA winner Tarryn Wyngaard stars as Suma-Lee, a divorced single mother whose life is a series of unfortunate events.
The Showmax Original is available for streaming from Friday, 7 February.
TARRYN WYNGAARD’S PORTRAYAL OF SUMA-LEE
The plot follows Suma-Lee as her world turns upside down when she loses her job and discovers her ex-husband, Dries, is marrying a model, according to Showmax Stories.
Seeking an outlet for her frustrations, she joins a boxing gym. There, she finds an unexpected connection with her coach, Clive, played by Jandre le Roux.
However, Clive’s life is just as complicated as hers. The film also features Erica Wessels as Suma-Lee’s boss and Meghan Oberholzer as Clive’s ex-wife.
TARRYN WYNGAARD AS SUMA-LEE
Wyngaard describes Suma-Lee as “a very elegant woman who is dissociated from her anger”. She added that it was “thrilling to find ways for her to release her anger in a way that suits her temperament”.
Wyngaard also praised the collaborative environment on set. She mentioned the trust she felt in Zoë Laband (writer), Annelize Frost (director), and Vlokkie Gordon (producer).
This trust made the creative process easier, especially with only 18 days to shoot the film.
LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS
Tarryn Wyngaard also reflected on the evolving nature of love and relationships in romcoms. She noted the increasing appreciation for female friendships and the prevalence of blended families, according to Terloops.
“To have an opportunity to contribute to the story of how we’re still trying to find each other, even though things get messy, was a real joy,” Wyngaard says.
Tarryn Wyngaard hopes viewers can learn from Suma-Lee’s journey.
“Her ex-husband and boss humiliate and knock her down repeatedly, which deeply affects her, yet she remains remarkably graceful,” she explains.
TARRYN WYNGAARD ON PREPARING FOR PHYSICAL SCENES
Suma-Lee understands that “the selfish, dismissive way of getting your power back is not her style at all”. She ultimately discovers that “she’s always held the key to her power”.
Wyngaard also shared the challenges of preparing for the physical scenes. They shot all the running, boxing, and other physical activities in just three days.
“It was intense, and I was physically challenged most intensely,” she admits. However, she emphasised the importance of linking Suma-Lee’s mental transformation with her physical one.
A FEEL GOOD MOVIE
Tarryn Wyngaard also spoke highly of her co-star, Jandre le Roux. “Jandre is a hunk with a heart of gold,” she says. “There’s power in that. Lots of testosterone and lots of kindness. Again, refreshing”.
Wyngaard personally learned that “you can be feminine and aggressive”. She also appreciated the joy of being soft and warm, finding it a healthier way to live, according to pfangirl.
Wyngaard encourages everyone to watch Gebokste Liefde. “It’s a feel-good movie,” she says. “It is good to watch with bubbles and popcorn and friends. I hope men like it too”.
