Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are in a two-horse race for the PSL title.
The Buccaneers lie six points behind the Brazilians but have a chance to close the gap to three when they face Sekhukhune United this evening.
Jose Riveiro’s side recorded zero transfers amid a Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns spending spree during the January window.
Rumours around the league
- Sipho Mbule has been a man reincarnated since joining Sekhukhune United on loan. Multiple figures believe he’s destined for Europe.
- Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly ready to offer midfielder George Matlou a contract extension. The 26-year-old, a few months away from becoming a free agent, has been impressive recently.
- Monnapule Saleng will remain in Soweto until the end of the PSL season.
- Masandawana midfielder Thapelo Maseko is eager for a loan move amid limited playing time.
More on Matlou
“For now, we can say the deal is as good as done,” a Siya source confirmed.
“The club wanted to see him, if he can play after the injury and after the technical team saw what he can do both at training and in the games he has played, they have agreed that they can offer him a new one-year contract with another one-year option,
“So, although it is not a done deal yet there is light at the end of the tunnel for George [Matlou]”.
A second source reaffirmed Chiefs’ commitment to the 26-year-old, saying, “to be honest with you, his injury almost cost him his future at Chiefs,
“Last season he was expected to play an important role but after just a few games he got injured. It was a long-term injury and when the new coach came in he was still recovering and was not part of his plans going into the new season,
“But after fully recovering, the technical team gave him a chance and now he is on the verge of a new deal. The injury is what delayed his progress but hopefully now things are looking good for him.”
