Nando’s has poked fun at Eskom’s decision to suddenly implement load shedding after almost a year of uninterrupted electricity.

The energy supplier announced on Friday, 31 March, that it would roll out Stage 3 blackouts throughout the weekend.

NANDO’S POKES FUN AT ESKOM – AGAIN

As many South Africans have, Nando’s has questioned Eskom over the “suspicious” timing of their load shedding announcement.

“Eskom is doing us thirty,” tweeted the cheeky chain of restaurants. It added: “They didn’t get their full meal. Now we have to eat in the dark.”

Nando’s was no doubt referring to the energy supplier’s call to implement a 36% tariff increase in 2025.The hike was suggested as an alternative to acquiring more state funding.

However, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) ruled that the increase would be no greater than 12.7%.

The increase would kick in on 1 April.

It’s not the first – and certainly won’t be the last time Nando’s will throw shade at Eskom.

In 2023, the popular restaurant posted a hilarious advert featuring eNCA reporter Shahan Ramiskoon. In it, the eatery called out Eskom’s former CEO, Andre de Ruyter, and the energy supplier’s excessive load shedding stages.

Just months earlier Nando’s had mocked De Ruyter’s early exit.

And it didn’t stop…

IS LOAD SHEDDING BACK?

Meanwhile, experts are predicting that load shedding will make a steady return in 2025, given the tariff adjustment putting financial pressure on Eskom.

Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane said about their decision to return to rolling blackouts: “This is a potentially temporary setback. Load shedding is largely behind us due to the structural improvements in our generation fleet.

“However, over the past seven days, we have experienced several breakdowns that require extended repair times. This has necessitated the use of all our emergency reserves, which now need to be replenished.”
