Muizenberg beachfront upgrades

The popular Muizenberg beachfront is all set to receive an extensive refurbishment starting this February.

According to reports, the work will begin next week and will take over a two-year period. The City has said that some of these refurbishments will include major upgrades to public amenities as well as a replacement of the beachfront’s aged seawalls.

“The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront is one of the biggest capital projects the City’s Coastal Management branch will undertake in recent years. We are extremely excited about the revamp and the long-term benefits it will bring to the area, the local community, and visitors.” the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews said in a statement.

What’s to be done?

The City has also said that the project will be done in phases and the first work will kick off along the western section of Surfer’s Corner, next to the railway line.

This will encompass the connection to the St James walkway, the Surfer’s Corner steps, the main promenade area as well as the existing informal gravel parking area along the railway line and eastern parking area.

Some of these upgrades and repairs will include:

  • A new stepped revetment coastal protection infrastructure
  • Clay pavers on the existing parking area along the railway line
  • New ablution facilities
  • A new pergola
  • An upgraded playground
  • A relocation of the beach huts

The beach will remain open and accessible at all times, but the City has warned of inconveniences while the upgrades are taking place.

Construction will take place Monday to Saturday, between 7:00 and 17:00, with some possible after-hours work depending on the tides.
