Kaizer Chiefs bolstered their squad by signing three players in the recently concluded transfer window.

There had been an emphasis on adding more quality and experience to the Chiefs squad in 2025 and beyond.

The club currently finds itself fifth in the Betway Premiership where they have been inconsistent. They were embarrassed 4-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns in a Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final was well. That loss arguably was the turning point for the Chiefs coaching staff and management in terms of their approach. Furthermore, they knew they needed to help youngsters Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi, Wandile Duba and Samkelo Zwane with some experience.

Chiefs added three new players to their roste

Subsequently, they went on to sign DRC international winger Glody Lilepo, striker Tashreeq Morris and Thabo Cele.The two forwards Lilepo and Morris were confirmed to have signed a 2-and-a-half year deals. While midfielder Cele, however, has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Chiefs.

With Chiefs desperate to change their fortunes in front of goal, their fans will be hoping for an instant impact. Especially with the Soweto Derby against Orlando Piratesproviding an enticing platform to do so. New striker Morris would’ve been chomping at the bit to get involved. But now according to FARPost, his suspension from his time at SuperSport United could prevent that!

Morris expected to bolster attack

“According to the PSL handbook, [Article 53:1] “A player dismissed by the referee [i.e. “red carded” or sent off, including dismissal as a result of 2 [two] yellow cards given in the same match] will, for the first occasion in a season, be suspended from participation in the next 2 [two] matches to be played by his team in any Competition under the auspices of the League. Article 53:8 further says, “Where a Player or Member Club Official transfers to a new Member Club during a period of suspension, the suspension will transfer concomitantly to the new Member Club.

Could he miss the Soweto Derby against Pirates?

In Morris’s case, he missed SuperSport’s 1-0 loss to Polokwane City on Friday, 17 January. With the January transfer window closing on Tuesday, 28 January 2025, the same day Matsatsantsa were in action, Chiefs may have registered him as their player before serving his second match. The Tshwane side only played their second match on Tuesday night. They faced Magesi FC in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup, which would have been Morris’s second match out. If Morris’s registration was completed before the match, the second suspension match would be as a Chiefs player on Saturday. It remains to be seen whether he will be eligible to face the Buccaneers in what would be an exciting debut for him.” Wrote the publication.

It now remains to be seen what Chiefs did with that situation. There would be hope from their supporters that they acted clever so that Morris can make his debut in the Soweto Derby.
