The 2025 Cape Town Carnival will be celebrating its 15th anniversary in March. It promises to be a vibrant celebration of music, dance, art, and culture.
What are this year’s highlights?
This year’s Cape Town Carnival is taking place on 15 March at the Green Point Fan Walk. Both local and international stars will take part in the event. It starts at 18:00 and entry is free.
As reported by capetownetc, the DHL Stormers rugby team will be taking part in the event. Markedly, this will be the first time in the Carnival’s history that the Stormers will participate. The team will be showcasing their dedicated float, ‘Taking the Cape by Storm’. Many Stormers fans are eagerly awaiting to see the players in action in the parade.
The event will also feature Brazilian actress and performer Erika Januza. Januza is set to bring the spirit of the Rio Carnival’s ‘Queen of the Drums’ to Cape Town. As a renowned performer from the biggest carnival in the world, her participation is sure to add a lively dose of Brazilian rhythm and excitement to the festivities.
What is the 2025 Cape Town Carnival’s theme?
At the official launch event on 16 January, the chairperson of the Cape Town Carnival Trust, Professor Rachel Jafta, revealed the theme for 2025: ‘WowZA!’.
This theme, she explained, reflects the joy and unity that the Carnival fosters, bringing people together to celebrate South Africa’s incredible creativity and culture.
‘When you come to the Cape Town Carnival, you see what South Africa can be. You see people from all over coming together to have fun and to tell and create stories through different formats like dance, music, performances, art, and beautiful costumes.’
‘For me, that is worth celebrating, as it is a moment that makes you say ‘Wow, South Africa’ – which is where our theme of WowZA! originates from,’ Jafta said.
Geordin Hill-Lewis, executive mayor of the City of Cape Town, at the launch said that the ‘Cape Town Carnival is an important event in the cultural calendar of the City of Cape Town as it brings people out of their homes to enjoy a public space alongside the whole city’.
