Pietermaritzburg – The embattled leader of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo, met with taxi associations from the uMgungundlovu District (Moses Mabhida Region) on Tuesday. He was joined by ANC provincial spokesperson Mafika Mndebele and Moses Mabhida regional secretary Samora Ndlovu. The aim of the engagement was to strengthen the relationship between the ANC and the taxi industry, brief the industry on recent political developments, and recognise the vital role this sector plays in connecting communities and driving local economic development.
Ntuzuma – The Ntuzuma Regional Court has sentenced Siyabonga Prince Cele, 23, to a term of life and 25 years’ imprisonment for rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and kidnapping committed in March 2022 in the Inanda and Phoenix areas. On 12 March 2022, Cele and his accomplices hijacked a car in Inanda. The complainant, who worked as a metered-car driver, was dropping off a passenger when Cele and his accomplices approached the driver with knives and firearms. They assaulted him, pulled him out of the vehicle and drove off. They then came across the female complainant who was walking along the road. They grabbed her and forced her into the back seat of the vehicle and subsequently raped her.
Bhambayi – Swift police investigations have led to the arrest of 12 suspects in connection with the murders of five people who were butchered to death at two sports fields at Bambayi in Inanda last Friday morning. The suspects are still being processed and their details as well as their first court appearance will be known in due course. The suspects are believed to be members of a local community forum and more arrests may follow.
