The Pietermaritzburg High Court ruled in favour of the Zulu monarch, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, as the urgent application by Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela Zulu to stop the King’s wedding has been dismissed.
Soon-to-be ex-wife of the King, recently sought a court interdict to stop King Misuzulu from marrying Nomzamo Myeni as his third wife, on the basis that they are still married in a civil marriage in community of property.
The court heard that Queen Ntokozo had given consent earlier, which led them to agree to change their civil marriage to customary marriage to allow the Zulu King to take more wives.
The court stated that she failed to prove the urgency of her application seeking to halt the Zulu King from marrying another woman.
Her legal representative, advocate Mandla Luthuli tried arguing that the King would be committing bigamy if he entered a civil or customary marriage with Nomzamo, while still married to the Queen.
Presiding Judge, Bongani Sidwell Mngadi said the Queen had previously agreed to the King marrying other women but was not seemingly turning her back on the agreement.
“She even agreed, as I stated above, how that will be done. So, she gave consent to the respondent to marry other wives. So, now when the respondent takes steps towards marrying other wives, it is difficult to understand why there is this turnaround on the part of the applicant,” said Judge Sidwell.
In conclusion of the court proceedings, the judge dismissed the Queen’s application citing that she did not present enough evidence on the urgency of her application, and Queen Ntokozo was ordered to pay legal costs.
