A 53-year-old suspect appeared in the Musina Magistrates’ Court today, 20 January 2025, after being arrested for allegedly possessing explosives at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.
The arrest followed a police search of a bus traveling from Zimbabwe to South Africa on 17 January 2025, according to the police. During the search, officers discovered a suspicious piece of luggage placed on top of the fuel tank. A thorough inspection revealed that the bag contained explosives.
Explosives Found During Search
The police summoned Musina-based Bomb Technicians, the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, and the Local Criminal Record Centre to the scene for further investigation.
Officers removed the luggage from the bus and, upon closer examination, found three reels of detonating fuse, each 350 meters long and valued at over R105,000. They also discovered a passport inside the bag, which led them to identify and arrest the suspect.
Ongoing Investigation about the explosives
The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Musina is handling the case. Authorities are working to determine the origin and intended use of the explosives, as well as any potential links to transnational crime networks.
Police Remain Vigilant
Major General (Adv.) Gopz Govender, Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Limpopo, praised the operation:
“This arrest demonstrates that law enforcement is making significant strides in the fight against transnational crime. Our vigilance at the borders is yielding results.”
