ANC to change its leadership in KZN and Gauteng

The African National Congress (ANC) says it will reconfigure its provincial executive committees in Gauteng and KZN within the parameters of its constitution.

This was confirmed by party leader Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday, 19 January, during his closing address after the party’s national executive committee (NEC) met at the weekend in Boksburg to deliberate about its poor electoral showing in the two provinces in 2024 amongst other issues.

ANC MAKES DECISION ON ITS KZN AND GAUTENG PECS

Nationally, support for the ANC plummeted from 57% to just 40%, while in KwaZulu-Natal, the party dropped from 54% to just 16.9%. Lastly, in Gauteng, the party also dropped from 51% to 34%.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the Jacob Zuma-led uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party emerged as the biggest winner, earning 45% of the total votes and 37 seats in the provincial legislature. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has the second-highest number of seats in the legislature, with 15, while the ANC has 14 seats.

After meeting with the KZN PEC late last year, Mbalula said the party has to make hard decisions to fix and reclaim the two provinces as the country prepares for the 2026 local government elections.

“There will be no holy cows. Decisions will be taken to strengthen ourselves in that particular province. Surely, people on the opposition side of politics in KZN are in Ferraris, and we can’t respond to a Ferrari with a [Toyota] conquest. We need to get into an airplane and fly,” he said.

On Saturday, Mbalula told journalists that the national working committee (NWC) presented three options to the NEC. These include the disbandment of the PECs, reconfiguration of the structures and keeping the status quo.

Previously, ANC Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi said that the calls to disband the leadership in the province were misplaced because the ANC lost the elections as a unit and not as Gauteng.

Lesufi was also summoned to Luthuli House, the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg over his anti-Government of National Unity remarks in 2024.
