Roads to avoid in Johannesburg due to inclement weather

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) have issued a road safety warning to motorists, reported Arrive Alive on 8 January 2025.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), disruptive rain is predicted to continue in certain provinces until Friday, 10 January 2025. The bad weather will lead to reduced visibility, strong winds and heavy rain causing unsafe driving conditions. These are the roads to avoid in Johannesburg around the country, especially between 18:00 and 1:00.

ROADS TO AVOID IN JOHANNESBURG DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

The transport department has provided a list of roads that motorists should avoid at certain provinces due to the continuous inclement weather, reported The Citizen on 8 January 2025.

JMPD Spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said: “In light of these adverse weather conditions, motorists are urged to exercise extra caution. Torrential rainfall can result in flooding on several roads throughout the city. Motorists should remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to flooding.”

JMPD further urged motorists to stay safe by saying: “Furthermore, motorists should avoid extremely flooded roads and low-lying bridges, as vehicles may be at risk of being swept away or trapped. We also encourage motorists to stay informed by monitoring traffic updates, ensuring safer travel in the city and surrounding areas.”

According to Collen Msibi, the transport department’s spokesperson, slippery roads and poor visibility has been predicted for KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
