Former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni is under fire from the party for his recent social media activity, with ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula confirming disciplinary action is underway.

Fikile accused Tony of spreading dissenting political views and labelled him a “political Casanova”.

He said Tony and other members making disparaging remarks on social media will be disciplined.

“Tony Yengeni will be charged. I have informed him through an SMS, I have called him. We will charge him. We will bring him before the disciplinary processes of the ANC so that he explains himself in terms of the membership of the ANC. For many other statements he has made, we will charge him.

“The discipline in ANC is important. I’ve seen other people on Twitter, every day when they have taken something at 2 am, tweeting things that bring the ANC into disrepute. They, too, will be attended to very soon,” he said during a media briefing on Monday.

According to IOL, Tony has openly criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership on social media and further strained relations within the ANC by representing former president Jacob Zuma during a disciplinary hearing after Zuma endorsed another political party ahead of the May 29 elections.

Despite the looming charges, Tony appeared unfazed, sharing a video of himself relaxing on Clifton Beach, Cape Town, captioned, “Stunning weather at the 4th beach yesterday.”
