- MK Party gives out free water to Shembe Church members walking to the holy mountain, saving them from high prices.
- Church members usually pay up to R40 for a 2-litre bottle of tap water during their pilgrimage.
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) came to the rescue of thousands of Shembe Baptist Church followers by giving them free water during their holy walk.
The church members are on their annual week-long journey by foot to their holy mountain of Canaan in Ndwedwe, north of Durban. The pilgrimage takes place at the beginning of January.
Since Sunday, MK Party members have been there with a large water tank, serving the pilgrims for free.
Shembe Nazareth Baptist Church spokesperson Thokozani Mncwabe told Scrolla.Africa that this kind of help is a first.
“Our leader is clear that all political parties are equal in front of his eyes, which is why he is grateful for what the MK Party has done to help the children of God with free water,” said Mncwabe.
Usually, pilgrims have to pay between R25 and R40 for a 2-litre bottle of tap water from local sellers.
Businesspeople make good money during the pilgrimage by charging high prices for basic services.
Some church members told Scrolla.Africa they even have to pay R20 just to charge their phone batteries.
Mncwabe said they don’t know exactly when they’ll reach Canaan Mountain. “It depends on what the word of almighty God says to their leader, Mduduzi Nyazilwezulu Shembe,” he explained.
