It was an electrifying weekend for South Africa as The King of R&B, Chris Brown delivered what could only be described as an ethereal two-day performance on the 14-15 December 2024.
The concert was held at Africa’s largest venue, the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa and hosted over 90000 fans. Throughout his career, the multi-hyphenate American singer, praised for his exceptional dancing skills, brought jaw-dropping performances in a seamless blend of R&B, hip-hop, and pop hits.Â
The American performer’s sold-out concert deserves accolades, but it invites comparison to Nigeria Afrobeat singer and songwriter Burna Boy’s cancelled show.
Why did Burna Boy face backlash in South Africa?
For years, xenophobia has been a harsh reality for many foreign nationals living in South Africa.
Africans, including Nigerians across the continent, often endure relentless slander derogatory criticism, and name-calling. Even Burna Boy, an internationally acclaimed artist, has not been immune to this harsh reality.
In 2023, ahead of his scheduled concert at the FNB Stadium, Burna Boy faced criticism for his outspoken stance against xenophobia in 2019. Additional criticism has included unverified allegations about a certain “body bag“.
Additionally, allegations of promoter scams and fund theft contributed to Burna Boy’s low sales.
While the artists may not have filled a South African stadium, the artist continues to make headway on international stages.
How do Chris Brown and Burna Boy compare in the face of talent and nationality?
The contrast between the two prominent artists highlights a distinction of nationality: one an African singer marked by the stain of culture, and an American singer with a renowned career living in global stardom.Â
Both Chris Brown and Burna Boy are undeniably talented in their respective music genres, earning multiple internationally recognised awards, including Grammys, BET, and MTV accolades.
While Chris Brown’s career spans decades of chart-topping hits, both artists have resonated strongly with their fan bases. However, when it comes to performance, ticket sales play a pivotal role in defining an artist’s success. Unfortunately, Burna Boy’s inability to rise to the occasion exposes his shortfall when compared to the American artists’ monumental achievement.
What contributed to Chris Brown’s concert success?
Putting aside the drama, Chris Brown’s creative bursts, honoured the musical genius and staples of South Africa’s cultural identity. DJ Fresh delivered a selection of local favourites that got the crowd grooving, including Boss Zonke and Fela in Versace by the late Riky Rick and AKA (respectively), and of course, Sister Bethina.
The inclusion of these beloved rhythms not only earned Chris Brown acclaim but also highlighted his respect for the country’s musical hits. Not to mention his dancing prowess that showcased his growing love for Amapiano and Afrobeats.Â
Altogether, the success of his sold-out ticket has set a standard for many international artists to aspire to in the future.Â
