Orlando Pirates are loving life under coach Jose Riverio.
Three successive MTN8 cups midst a thirteen-year PSL drought has kept their silverware tally ticking – this season may be their best chance of winning the league.
Tied on points with leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates began the season, for the first time in its history, winning seven from seven before losing to Stellenbosch FC last weekend.
However good they have been, a cloud of uncertainty remains above several key players and their head coach.
Pirates update
- Monnapule Saleng, who isn’t injured, has been out of action since enjoying a strong start to the season. The pacey winger is said to be dealing with personal issues.
- Spanish tactician Jose Riveiro has hinted at the fact that he could leave once the season concludes having not signed a contract extension, and reportedly dealing with homesickness.
- Relehobile Mofokeng has Barcelona FC inquiring about him.
- Defender Sandile Mthethwacould be another figure leaving the club after the season concludes – Orlando Pirates are apparently unwilling to extend his contract which runs out in June next year.
Jose Riveiro talks PSL
“We have the same number of points with Sundowns but are separated by goal difference right now, but it’s only eight games we have to play 30 games,
“Trust me, we are here to compete, and we know how difficult it could be. Winning every game is a challenge, but we are prepared to fight for the title until the last match.”
“We would like to be on top with a 10-point advantage, but I know that sometimes it’s not possible because of the level of the league,” Riveiro said. “We are now preparing for the next game, and we’ll fight until the last game.”
