The Northern Cape Department of Education said Mthetwa served as an educator at the Hotazel Combined School and was on duty at one of the marking centres in Kimberley.
The department immediately notified the school and her family and offered the necessary support.
In addition, psycho-social support services to the school and her colleagues for counselling sessions were activated.
Education MEC Abraham Vosloo has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and her colleagues in the education sector.
“According to our information, Ms. Blessing Mthetwa has served her school and the community at large with distinction, and her contribution to the education system will be sorely missed,” the department said.
GAUTENG MARKER DIES IN FREAK INCIDENT
Mthetwa’s death comes just days after another female matric exam marker at the Alberton marking centre died.
The isiXhosa marker passed away on Tuesday, 3 December, after she allegedly tripped and hit her head against a pole while leaving the center in the evening.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said following the incident, the 50-year-old was immediately rushed to the hospital but, sadly, succumbed to her injuries later that night while receiving medical attention.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane extended his condolences to the deceased marker’s family, friends, and colleagues.
“Her commitment to the education sector was invaluable, and her untimely passing is a profound loss to all of us,” Chiloane said.
