Since leaving Mamelodi Sundowns, Bongani Zunguhas been linked with a move to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.
The 31-year-old midfielder has been without a club for five months, despite having options. One of the teams interested in signing him was Wydad Casablanca. With his former coach Rulani Mokwenaat the helm, a reunion with the ex-Sundowns mentor seemed logical. Zungu trained with the Moroccan club for several days, but they ultimately decided not to sign him due to his lack of fitness.
Reasons Zungu’s Move to Kaizer Chiefs is Unlikely
After spending several years in France and Portugal, Zungu made a surprise return to the PSL by rejoining Sundowns. Although he won two league titles with Masandawana, he was not as impactful as during his first stint with the club. Zungu still desires to play abroad, so settling at Kaizer Chiefs may not make sense for him. Amakhosi are not participating in any CAF competitions and are currently in 8th place in the Betway Premiership.
At 31 years old, Zungu still has plenty to offer and may be looking to play in the Middle East or North Africa. The former Bafana Bafana star does not come cheap and Amakhosi will need to have a budget set aside to bring the CAF Champions League winner to Naturena.
For now, Zungu remains a free agent while Kaizer Chiefs look to sign more attacking players this January transfer window. Ben 10 only played 13 league matches for Masandawana last season as he struggled with injuries.
