From 1 June 2025, Bakwenawill upgrade to contactless card payments on the N1N4 route, enhancing security and reducing fraudulent toll transactions.
Fraudsters
This upgrade will enable real-time payments thereby reducing the risk of stolen debit or credit cards being used by fraudsters at toll plazas.
Contactless payments ensures that cards remain in the possession of its owner during payment.
In the meantime, Bakwena will continue to accept credit and fleet card magstripe payments as well as cash and Sanral tag payment methods at Bakwena toll plazas.Â
Note that no debit cardsÂare accepted.

Bakwena offers thousands of motorists safer and more efficient roads, while assisting with roadside emergencies and collecting tolls.
The routes Bakwena manage consists of 90km of a section of the N1 running from Tshwane northwards to Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) and a 295km section of the N4 running from Tshwane westwards through Rustenburg and Zeerust to the Botswana border.
