Cape Town’s holiday season officially began on Sunday, 1 December, as Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis lit the city’s Christmas lights in the CBD.
This year’s event, held at the Grand Parade, drew a crowd of around 80 000 spectators, all eager to witness the spectacular light display.
Now in its 55th year, the annual switch-on has become a beloved occasion for families and residents, uniting Capetonians from all walks of life.
Entertainment was in full swing
Hill-Lewis highlighted the theme for this year, ‘Cape Town: People of Hope,’ calling it a reflection of the resilience and generosity that define the city’s citizens.
‘I see hope in the people of Cape Town every day,’ said Hill-Lewis.
‘They are kind, generous, and help each other through difficult times. Our City may still have challenges, but we are moving in the right direction. That, to me, is hope.’
The mayor also reminisced about his childhood, recalling how he once attended the event as a young boy.
‘This tradition brings families together, and it’s a joy to see it continue year after year,’ he added.
Entertainment was in full swing, with live performances from artists such as Three Tons of Fun, Meneer Cee, Dr Victor and Mafikizolo, ensuring the crowd stayed energised throughout the six-hour celebration.
