Sekhukhune United have completed the signing of a highly-rated attacker from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town Spurs.

In the past transfer window, CT Spurs lost a handful of their key players after being relegated at the end of the 2023/24 Betway Premiership season to the second-tier league.

The Urban Warriors sold talented defender Rushwin Dortley to Kaizer Chiefs, while Ashley Cupido and Chumani Butsaka joined Stellenbosh FC ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

On the other hand, Sekhukhune have also made exciting signings of the top talent in the PSL. In recent times, Babina Noko sealed big deals for players such as Linda Mntambo, Thabang Monare, Sipho Mbule, Njabulo Ngcobo, Lesedi Kapinga, Keletso Makgalwa, and Jamie Webber.

In a move to further beef up their squad, the Limpopo-based outfit snapped CT Spurs’ promising talent Liyema Mafu.

The 19-year-old caught the eyes of Sekhukhune at the 2024 Under-19 Bayhill Premier Cup after winning the tournament with the Cape Town Spurs.

Mafu’s performance at the annual Bayhill Cup in Cape Town saw him receive a national team call-up for the SA’s U-20 squad.

According to FARPost sources, Mafu has penned a three-year contract with Sekhukhune. Although he has already featured for the club’s DStv Diski Challenge side last weekend, it is understood that Mafu signed a first-team contract.

“Sekhukhune United have won the race to sign Liyema Mafu who is seen as one of the next big thing in SA football,” a source close to the information said.

“The player arrived in Gauteng from Cape Town two weeks ago to sign his contract with Sekhukhune United. I can tell you that the club is very excited to have this talented midfielder because it’s only a matter of time before people see his full potential.”
