On Thursday, a significant breakthrough in the fight against digital piracy was achieved with the arrest of Jurgen Johannes Potgieter in Gauteng.
The operation, supported by detectives from the Eldorado Park Police Station, marks a hallmark in the ongoing antipiracy efforts led by the JSE-listed broadcaster, MultiChoice.

The raid in Gauteng follows similar operations recently conducted in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Potgieter was detained for selling login credentials and internet streaming pirate devices, facilitating illegal access to premium content.
These activities are in direct violation of several sections within the Cybercrime Act, and Potgieter is also facing charges of money laundering. During the raid, police confiscated equipment that will now undergo thorough analysis.
Frikke Jonker, the Director of Broadcast Cybersecurity and Antipiracy at MultiChoice-owned Irdeto, emphasized the importance of this operation.
“This raid highlights our continuous efforts to dismantle illegal operations that undermine the creative industry,” he stated. Jonker also commended the professionalism displayed by the police, which significantly contributed to the success of the raid.
MultiChoice is not working alone in this fight. The company is part of the Partners Against Piracy initiative, an Africa-wide, multi-stakeholder effort aimed at combating copyright infringement.

This initiative collaborates with local governments and prosecutors to strengthen the enforcement of intellectual property laws. Key agencies involved include the Serious Commercial Crime Unit of the Hawks, the South African Police Service, and various provincial cybercrime units.
As the investigation continues and more raids are expected, MultiChoice remains committed to protecting the creative industry from the detrimental impacts of digital piracy.
