The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has taken a significant step in the ongoing battle against corruption by filing for an urgent interdict to halt the sale of land previously owned by the Mahikeng Local Municipality.
This land, embroiled in a fraud case for over 16 years, is currently under investigation by the Hawks.

The Mahikeng Local Municipality initially sought to sell the land for R144 million but instead received just R5 million. This dubious transaction has remained under scrutiny, with the company involved now in liquidation without settling its debt to the municipality.
The land was later sold at auction to another company for R16 million, which subsequently transferred portions to various entities. Despite numerous attempts by law enforcement agencies to secure a preservation order, these efforts have been thwarted.
The NPA’s recent urgent interdict aims to prevent the current owner from selling the land again. NPA spokesperson Sive Gunya has emphasized that their actions are within the legal framework provided by the Prevention of Organized Crime Act.
Opposition parties in the North West have expressed their concerns and calls for swift action. The EFF spokesperson, Fanon Moema, has called for a comprehensive investigation to halt the sale until the case reaches its conclusion.
