WESTONARIA SUBSTATION THEFT

Eskom SA has reported that the electricity supply to the Westonaria Local Municipality is affected due to theft and vandalism.

They stated, “We are assessing the extent of the damages. At this stage, we are not able to provide the estimated time of restoration.”

Additionally, the electricity supply to Donkerhoek has been interrupted due to a tree that fell on the power lines. Technicians are currently assessing the situation.

Eskom has apologised for any inconvenience caused by these interruptions.

ESKOM SAVES BILLIONS DUE TO NO LOAD-SHEDDING

Eskom announced that it has saved approximately R16.52 billion after reaching 282 consecutive days without load shedding.

This accomplishment allowed for the return of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 to the national grid on 30 December 2024, last year.

“Unplanned outages remain on a downward trend at -8.1% compared to the same period last year. Diesel savings are at R16.52 billion, which is about 65.2% less than the R25.34 billion spent during the same period last year. Diesel usage remains below the year-to-date budget,” explained Eskom.

Over the past weekend, Eskom’s Energy Availability Factor (EAF) was approximately 54.65%, primarily due to increased planned maintenance. Other stations, such as Medupi and Kusile, achieved an average EAF of 60% or higher.

ESKOM ELECTRICITY THEFT

According to MyBroadBand, a staggering 2.1 million prepaid customers have been purchasing electricity illegally. Eskom has urged customers to refrain from making illegal connections, as these can lead to network overload issues in certain areas. Additionally, customers are advised to purchase electricity only from authorized vendors.

Do you think poverty is the main reason people engage in illegal electricity connections?
