7-to-8-hour power outage to affect 39 areas in Johannesburg

Residents in Johannesburg are urged to prepare for a 7-to-8-hour power outage power outage in 39 areas starting from Monday, 17 February 2025. The interruption will occur for eight hours, and in some areas, for seven hours at different times for each suburb.

WHY IS THERE A POWER OUTAGE?           

City Power Johannesburg stated that the power interruption is necessary for maintenance work on their electricity network. Another key reason for the interruption is to provide a better service, as outdated electricity networks tend to deliver poor electricity supply.

The City apologised for the inconvenience caused by the interruption.

“City Power regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by this interruption.”

WHICH AREAS ARE AFFECTED?

In IBG SWS, scheduled for Monday, 17 February 2025, the power outage will occur from 9:00 to 17:00 in these areas:

  • International Business Gateway (IBG)
  • Midridge Park Ext. 13
  • Halfway Gardens Ext. 103
  • Erand Gardens Ext. 49

In Parkhurst Substation, scheduled for Wednesday, 19 February 2025, the power outage will occur from 8:00 to 16:00 in these areas:

  • Victory Park
  • Linden
  • Pierneef Park
  • Some parts of Blairgowrie

In Glen Lea Substation, scheduled for Thursday, 20 February 2025, the power outage will occur from 8:00 to 16:00 in these areas:

  • Lea Glen
  • Fleurhof
  • Rand Water

In Kyalami Park SWS, scheduled for Thursday, 20 February 2025, the power outage will occur from 9:00 to 17:00 in these areas:

  • Indianapolis
  • Kyalami Boulevard
  • Shopping Centre
  • Entrance Court
  • Monza Close
  • Silverton Crescent
  • Brand Hach Close
  • Monte Carlo Crescent
  • Bonnita

In Stormille Switching Station, scheduled for Friday, 21 February 2025, the power interruption will occur from 8:00 to 16:00 in these areas:

  • Highgate Mall
  • Putcotin

In Gressworld Substation, scheduled for Saturday, 22 February 2025, the power interruption will occur from 8:00 to 15:00 in these areas:

  • Wynberg 1 and 2
  • Wynberg East and West
  • Wynberg/Kew
  • Kew South and West
  • Kew/Bramley View
  • Glenhazel
  • Glenhazel South
  • Rambrandt Park
  • Lombady East

CITY POWER EMPLOYEES ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED CABLE THEFT

Six City Power employees were arrested for allegedly stealing electricity cables. According to EWN,the suspects were caught in possession of suspected stolen cables on 12 February 2025, at the Observatory substation in Johannesburg.

City Power reported that some of the suspects had hidden cables in their bags and shoes.

Isaac Mangena, spokesperson of City Power, stated, “The damage caused by such criminal activity poses a severe threat to safety and security and also the stability of essential services in the region.”
