ALEXANDRA COMMUNITY MEMBERS PROTEST OVER DELAYS IN POWER RESTORATION
Community members in Alexandra protested over delays in power restoration on Tuesday, 18 February 2025. The community members gathered at City Power’s Service Delivery Centre (SDC) in Johannesburg. According to City Power Johannesburg, protestors burned tyres and blocked the gates of the centre, which further hindered efforts to resolve the power disruption.
A minor outage had occurred in the area on Monday, 17 February 2025, affecting residents from 3rd Avenue to 5th Avenue.
RAINFALL ADDS TO POWER RESTORATION DELAYS
Additionally, rainfall contributed to the delays in restoring power disruptions.
“That’s why we encountered delays in addressing that power supply interruption. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
eNCA reported that a resident, Lebo Sediane said that there had been multiple attempts to engage City Power on the power restoration with no success.
“We have been struggling with electricity for the past three weeks, and their excuse to use it is that it is raining and they cannot address the issue,” Sediane said.
He added that they came back the next day, and they were given a different date on when the power would return.
Mangena later confirmed that the power supply had been fully restored.
“We, however, are pleased that finally, the power supply has been fully restored. It is crucial to highlight that working on power lines during adverse weather conditions, particularly heavy rain, presents serious safety risks,” Mangena said.
